Have you always wanted to learn a new language? Did you want to increase your ability to communicate better with someone in the Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing community? The American Sign Language (ASL) certificate at San Juan College will provide you with training in basic American Sign Language as well as an understanding the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing cultures. Sign language is the native language of the Deaf community and an extremely important communication tool for those who are hard-of-hearing. With a broad understanding of this visual language, you will be ready to immerse yourself within the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing communities and cultures.

This certificate will introduce you to American Sign Language (ASL), Deaf culture, and the history of the Deaf community. You will gain an understanding of the scope and types of support services that are available to Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community. Students in the ASL certificate program will enhance their current and future employment opportunities, whether working within the Deaf community or in the education field.

 

 

Why Study American Sign Language at San Juan College?

San Juan College has been offering an American Sign Language class for many years. We recognize the importance of ASL as another language.  The new certificate enhances the curriculum to address the history, culture and issues associated with ASL. Our instructors not only want to help students' ability to comprehend other signers, but to help express themselves when conversing or presenting in ASL.  

 

What You’ll Learn

You will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a broad understanding of the language, culture, and history of American Deaf People.
  • Effectively communicate in ASL and work with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing people in various settings.
  • Identify local and national resources for Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing and late Deafened adults.

This certificate does not qualify you as a sign language interpreter by itself. Students wishing to continue their studies in ASL and/or ASL interpreting should consult with their advisor.
